CPR, AED and First Aid Training
Each year, the Fire Department trains over 700 students, faculty and staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and first aid techniques. All classes are taught using American Red Cross curriculum and participants receive certification from the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Please note that as of July 1, 2008, several aspects of the CPR, AED and first aid training program have changed. More information about public class offerings and scheduling on-request classes can be found on the following pages:
To signup for a scheduled CPR/AED or First Aid class, please visit the UCSC Events Manager events listing and select the course you wish to signup for. Classes are limited to 15 participants and will show as full if this limit is reached.
Note: These classes are intended for the lay rescuer. The Fire Department does not conduct public professional rescuer classes at this time. If you need CPR training for a specific purpose, such as licensure, please ensure that a lay rescuer certification is adequate.
Fire Extinguisher Training
The Fire Department offers fire extinguisher training on the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 AM to noon at the fire station. The Fire Department can also schedule classes on request for campus groups. This training is approximately one to two hours in length and is offered at no charge. The training consists of a classroom section on basic fire safety and fire extinguisher use, followed by a hands-on exercise using the Fire Department's state-of-the-art fire extinguisher simulator which allows for a clean and safe, yet realistic, training environment. Contact Leslie Dumller at (831) 459-3473 to sign-up for a class or for more information.
Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training
The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) course educates people within our campus community about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area. This 20 hour course trains participants in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood, housing area or workplace following an event when professional responders may not be immediately available to help. The cost is $75 per person payable by cash, check or University recharge. For more information, contact Leslie Dumller at (831) 459-3473.
For more information, please visit the CERT webpage.
